Waterproof zippers used to be a niche item for professional rain gear. Today they appear on everything from commuter softshells to ski suits to school backpacks - and the most common question our outdoor-apparel customers ask is not "whether" to use a coated zipper, but "which coating": PU or TPU. Here is how we help buyers decide.
PU-coated zippers bond a thin polyurethane film onto the tape over a nylon coil. The result is a lightweight, cost-effective zipper that keeps out light rain and splash. PU is the pragmatic choice for windbreakers, spring jackets, and budget-conscious outdoor lines where the zipper faces occasional moisture rather than all-day weather. The film keeps a low profile on the garment, and logo printing on the film is straightforward.
TPU-coated zippers use a thermoplastic polyurethane film with a stronger set of properties: better abrasion resistance, better flexibility in cold temperatures, and a cleaner, more premium surface. TPU handles repeated friction - think backpack straps, ski suit cuffs, or jacket fronts under a pack's sternum strap - without whitening or peeling as early as standard PU. For technical outerwear that will see real weather, TPU is what we recommend, and it is the coating behind our recently completed 7-color No.7 TPU waterproof zipper project for an outdoor apparel manufacturer.
How to decide. Match the coating to the exposure. Occasional drizzle, urban commute, tight cost target: PU. Sustained rain, snow, abrasion from gear, or a premium price point: TPU. Consider the zipper size next - #3 waterproof zippers suit pockets and vents; #5 is the standard for jacket fronts; larger sizes are available for heavy applications. Both coatings work on standard and reverse-coil constructions, so the clean-face look of an A/W zipper and full waterproofing are not mutually exclusive.
One warning from our production floor. A waterproof zipper is only as good as its consistency. Coating thickness that varies between batches changes both the look and the performance; a tape color that misses the shell fabric by one shade shows up the moment the jacket is photographed. That is why every waterproof zipper project at Xinyi goes through pre-production samples, batch-by-batch color checks against the customer's card, and inspection of coating surface quality before packing.
If you are planning a waterproof line, send us the garment design, target price band and color card. We will quote PU and TPU side by side, produce both as pre-production samples if you wish, and let the samples make the decision. Contact our sales team to start.
How waterproof is "waterproof"? A coated zipper is one part of a system that also includes the garment's seam construction and any storm flap. Coated zippers are water-resistant rather than fully submersible: they reliably block spray and light rain, but stitched seams around them still need tape sealing or a placket for true downpour performance. Setting the right expectation here protects both brands: the zipper performs as specified, and the end customer gets a garment that behaves the way the marketing promised.
